Reflective Writing 6: first webinar in the 4th semester
Source: pinterest
Hello!
How are you? I hope you are in good health and happiness. I will write
reflectively about what I got in yesterday's webinar on this occasion. Yap,
before that, I would like to inform you that this meeting of the academic
writing course is held simultaneously with the webinar, and this webinar will
be my first webinar in the 4th semester. Wow, that's cool! So, in this webinar,
we discussed "Vocabulary Profile and Lexical Bundles of EFL Academic
Writing: A Corpus-based Study in English Teaching." with speaker Mr. Dr.
Christianus I Wayan Eka Budiartha from Sampoerna University.
There
are three different research strands in vocabulary study: lexical knowledge,
literacy, and metalinguistics awareness. Lexical knowledge is understanding
words and their uses. Corson's work defines literacy as the importance of the
mastery of medium to low-frequency words of Greek or Latin origin with the
intention of the academic success of many learners. So, academic success is
amenable to an ability to access and use a higher lexical register. Students
who cannot change lexical gears and shift from an informal conversation
register to an analytical academic register encounter more and more
difficulties at school as the reading and writing demands increase.
Metalinguistic awareness is defined as the ability to distance oneself from the
content of speech to reflect upon and manipulate language structure. NSs had
little experience in metalinguistic analysis, while NNSs had better background
knowledge. Therefore, the work on teacher metalinguistic awareness is something
significant for EFL students.
Multi-word
expressions are believed to be a source of difficulty for non-native users. The
essential aspects of language teaching and learning are necessary to achieve
native-like competence and fluency to the extent that they are. Formulaic
language is defined as sequences of words "stored and retrieved whole from
memory at the time of use, rather than being subject to generation or analysis
by the language grammar.". In contrast, the lexical bundle is "a
recurring sequence of three or more words" that commonly go together in
natural discourse. Lexical bundles help to shape meaning in the specific
context and contribute to our sense of coherence in a text.
So
there are several points from this webinar, namely, IELTS essay writing band 8
fulfilled the lexical proportion of academic writing. The second is in a
timed-essay test, and the examinees could not construct longer lexical bundles
than three and four words. Regarding the structure characteristics, several
lexical bundles were closely related (e.g., the other hand, on the other, on
the other hand, etc.). Meanwhile, new lexical bundles expressed unique function
characteristics, ie highlighting the first person point of view (eg I believe
that, in my opinion, I strongly believe that, etc.)
Thank
you for reading my reflective! Have a good day and good mind๐๐
